Building your own website might have been on your to-do list for a long time, but you just keep making excuses and putting it off. So, I’m going to walk you through how easy it is to set up with Bluehost.
If you haven’t heard of them before, BlueHost is one of the most popular hosting services for writers and bloggers for the following reasons:
- They are one of the cheapest hosting providers
- They make it really easy for you to set up a website by yourself. Anyone can do this!
- Bluehost has excellent support if you get stuck
- YOU GET A FREE DOMAIN! YAY!
- You can set up WordPress free with one click
- Bluehost offers a guarantee if you don’t think their service is right for you
- When you’ve set up your website with Bluehost, you own it. Having your own, self-hosted site promotes you as a professional to your readers and potential clients, and we all want this!
If you’re starting any kind of business, including freelance writing, having your own website to display your product, service or portfolio is essential.
LIkewise, if you’re starting a blog, you’ll need a self-hosted website so people can find you easily when they search online. Having your own site will also enable you to monetize your blog once you have enough traffic so that it can start loving you back for all the hard work you’ve put into it!
While there are lots of free website options around, having a generic website under a subdomain of something like Wix or Weebly doesn’t look that great when you show it to clients or try and build an audience around your blog.
When you look at any of your favourite websites, I can pretty much guarantee their URL isn’t something like “awesomeblogger.freedomain.website.com”. Right?
I’m a firm believer in the phrase “

The Basic Plan will be all you need for a long time. You can upgrade at any point and pay the difference if you need to.
Choose your website name
This is the exciting bit!! Bluehost gives you a free domain name with your sign-up!
Your domain (website) name is really important, as this will be your brand name. It reflects who you are and what you do. You should put some thought into choosing your domain to avoid a costly and time-consuming name change further down the track. I’ve been through a website re-branding, and it was a massive pain in the ass, trust me!
Check if your chosen name is available by entering it into the box on the left-hand side. If you already have a registered domain name and need hosting for it with Bluehost, enter it into the box on the right-hand side as shown below.
This is where you fill in all your important details. You know the
Okay, now you need to decide on your commitment to your website (and to your writing!).
The cheapest Bluehost pricing option is the 36-month package, as shown in the drop-down section of the image below. It is a lot to pay upfront, so if you can’t afford that right now, the 12-month package is what I would recommend. It’s still a great price and 12 months is a good amount of time to get your business or blog performing well.
Monthly payments are the most expensive option, and I don’t recommend this option because having to renew every month gets annoying, especially if you forget and your website suddenly disappears!
Untick all of the checkboxes except for the Domain Privacy Protection. The other items
Having domain privacy protection will mean spammers can’t easily get hold of your email address and start to make your life a living hell.
With the first website I set up, I was trying to budget hard and I didn’t want to spend an extortionate $0.99c per month extra, so I left it out. 12 hours later, I started getting a bunch of spam in my inbox. Those guys are so fast, it’s unbelievable!
Type in your payment details. I won’t peek….
Type in your super secret details and you’re almost finished!
Password success! Yay!
Hopefully that all went smoothly and you now have your Bluehost login details. Go ahead and
Congratulations my friend, you now have your very own website!
Celebrate by whatever methods you deem appropriate! Have a beer, take your pants off, cover yourself in jam, I won’t judge you.
Make sure you bookmark your new URL address for the admin
You’ll be asked to select a theme. A free one will do for now, but I highly recommend buying a paid theme as soon as you can. I recommend Divi by Elegant Themes (this website is built with Divi). It is highly responsive and lets you design amazing web pages very easily.
The Divi Builder feature that this theme comes with makes building your website FUN. It allows you to build directly from the front end (this screen you’re looking at right now) so you can see exactly where your text and images are going, and what they look like. There’s no annoying switching between the coding and preview screens, which saves a lot of time!
Divi is one of the most popular paid themes for this reason. There are a huge amount of tutorials available, and Elegant Themes customer support is second to none. No matter what your questions are, or what you broke while you were messing around, they will help you solve it!
This is where you launch your site!
Check it out, there will be a “coming soon” page when you enter your URL until you publish your page.
I’m excited that you’ve decided to join the millions of other freelance writers and bloggers making a living doing what they enjoy! I’d love to see your new website once you’ve set it up with this tutorial.
